A Partial Migration Solution May be
Worse Than None At All

| We spoke to an MPE/iX user who
contracted with a "migration vendor" who only "migrated" their COBOL. It was
left to the customer to deal with their VPLUS screens, JCL, utilities, batch job
processing, spoolers, etc. Interestingly enough, migrating COBOL is
probably the easiest part of the migration project. All of the rest
of the MPE related products are more complex if one is going to rewrite them to
suit another, non-MPE environment It is not difficult to imagine a
situation like this ending badly.
Let's analyze the "migrated" claim.
If your COBOL syntax is converted so that you get clean compiles is it
"migrated"? This is not a trick question. The answer is that it is not
migrated until you can run the program and all of the things related to it
(screens, JCL or scripts, other related programs, etc.) and prove that it works.
In the situation described above, the "migration vendor" has cleverly shifted
the responsibility for success of the project to the hiring company. After
converting the COBOL all the end user company has is a bridge to nowhere.
They have created an illusion of accomplishment and likely have
been paid in full in the process. So the customer is stuck with the
responsibility to finish the project. If the project fails, it is now the
customer's fault. The
only test that is useful after a real migration is that by running the program
you can prove that it functions substantially the same and produces functionally
the same acceptable results as it does in the MPE/iX environment.
